Banjo Joe - I'm Just an Old Hobo - 7" vinyl EP
Joe is most widely known as the endearingly inebriated mouthpiece for Southern Illinois’ rowdiest string band, The Whistle Pigs. It was during his time with the Whistle Pigs where Joe developed his distinct two-finger style of playing banjo. Joe’s thumb plays most of the leads while his middle finger plays on the up beat. Joe remarked that developing his own style was not intentional at all, he merely taught himself to play in a way that made sense to him. The particular style he developed stands out as being a wholly unique regional banjo style and is unlike any other across the United States.
This collection of songs exemplifies the new Banjo Joe. The songs have, on their surface, that trademark Banjo Joe smirk of humor and genuine old-time charm. However, beneath is a layer of maturity and - at times - even melancholy. Recorded with two microphones in a single afternoon, this EP captures the haunting warble which Joe’s voice often finds and displays just how exemplary his picking prowess is. It stands out as an excellent documentation of both Joe's return to music and the first effort of River to River Community Records.
Includes digital downloads and a R2R Community Records sticker.
